Explore Puglia’s Tremiti Islands

If you’re hoping to have a vacation in Puglia right by the sea, you may be interested in paying a visit to the region’s infamous Tremiti Islands. This archipelago of small isles is located off the coast of Apulia, in the Adriatic Sea, and are the only Italian islands within this body of water. There’s plenty for you to see and do here – and to help you when deciding whether or not to stop by, our team at Travel Puglia want to share with you just a few bits of information about why it’s well worth a visit.

Don’t miss out on the chance to check out the Tremiti Islands

From Alberobello to Ostuni, and Polignano a Mare to Otranto; there are so many amazing places across the whole of the region that anyone would want to visit during their holidays in Puglia. While the Tremiti Islands are just one of many fantastic options, they certainly should be taken into consideration when planning your trip.

Located right by the Gargano peninsula, this is a great place to visit if you decide to spend a day exploring this part of the region – and it’s not too difficult to travel to regardless of where in Puglia you choose to go. If you look into options for where to stay in the Tremiti Islands, you’re likely to see that San Domino is the best choice. This is the biggest island and is home to a variety of hotels, as well as much more to keep you busy.

There are five different islands, and while Cretaccio and Pianosa don’t really have much for visitors to do, there’s so much in store for you at the other three.

What is there to see and do here?

Since there’s a wide variety of things on offer here in the Tremiti Islands, it might be easier to categorise based on location – that way, during your visit, you can make sure that you spend as much time as you need in the area that’s best suited to your needs.

San Domino

Here, you’ll find the majority of things to keep you occupied; from restaurants and stores, to the stunning cliffs and beaches. If you’re hoping to relax underneath the warm Mediterranean sun and enjoy the beautiful waters, you might also want to check out one of the several great swimming coves; it’s worth noting that the best of which can often be reached from trails on foot or by boat.

Another reason why this area is so popular is because it has the only sand beach in the archipelago – which is certainly something that appeals to most tourists.

It’s often so easy to spend hours upon hours here without realising just how much time has passed, and you’re certain to find yourself wanting to come back for more. Plus, if you’re hoping to check out some of the other islands during your trip too, you can easily hop onto one of the ferries from the mainland or hire a water taxi to get around.

San Nicola

San Domino tends to be the most popular of the islands here, mainly due to the fact that it’s the biggest and has a range of things for visitors to enjoy, as well as the beautiful coast line and stunning scenery. Despite everything that it has to offer though, you’ll definitely want to spare some time to come to San Nicola.

This is the second most visited of the five islands, and it’s best known for its castle-like abbey. This is a truly incredible site, and it dates all the way back to 1045. In this magnificent structure, you’ll find incredible mosaic flooring, the large Byzantine crucifix (named Il Cristo Grande) and absolutely breathtaking views. Thanks to its position on top of the cliffs, it makes for an impressive first impression on San Nicola as a whole.

Most of the population of the archipelago resides here, which also offers visitors more culture and tradition. Sites like the monastery only add to this, making it the best island for anyone interested in the historical and cultural side of Puglia.

Capraia

If you’re looking for something a little closer to nature than the more touristy San Domino or the old-fashioned San Nicola, a trip to Capraia could be perfect for you. This area is predominantly populated by birds and some beautiful flora and fauna – and since it’s uninhabited by humans, it offers a very peaceful and relaxed atmosphere. This, alongside the sights, make it an excellent choice for those hoping to get away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world (and other people), to enjoy nature in all its glory.
