Why Visit the Province of Lecce, Puglia?

The Italian region of Puglia has so much to offer, with a variety of breathtaking towns, fun activities, stunning views, and so much more. The Province of Lecce is one of the many amazing locations that we’re sure you’ll want to explore. Many years ago, this area was known as Terra d’Otranto (Land of Otranto in English) – and you’ll find that there is plenty to love in this unique historical and geographical destination.

One bonus of visiting Puglia is that most vacationers overlook this part of Italy, so you’ll get to explore the many wonders of the Province of Lecce without worrying about the flood of tourists that frequent the country annually.

You can still see traces of Terra di Otranto in the Province of Lecce, but this is just one of the reasons why we’re certain that you’ll want to spend some time in this part of Italy. Here are just a few of the things that you might want to know before coming for a holiday.

What was Terra d’Otranto?

Once upon a time, this land was a crucial piece of the Kingdom of Naples (and before that, the Kingdom of Sicily). It officially became the Province of Lecce in 1860, during the unification of Italy. Otranto was once the capital (which you may have been able to guess from the name), but during the Norman period in the 12th century, Lecce became the capital instead.

Brindisi, Lecce, Otranto, and Taranto are a few of the areas that have been crucial to this location, all the way back to the 11th century – and the ancient aura of these locations is sure to make you feel as though you’re exploring a piece of history.

The different districts

Terra di Otranto was once split up into a number of districts, each of which was governed by a municipality. The districts were:

  • Brindisi
  • Gallipoli
  • Lecce
  • Taranto

If you visit any of these locations today, you’ll definitely feel the history as you explore. If you want to get even deeper into the incredible past of Terra di Otranto, you might want to take the time to stop by at one of the excellent museums and historical sites here, such as Museo Faggiano, Castello di Gallipoli, and Museo Sigismondo Castromediano – which are just a few of the many great examples.

What is there to do in the Province of Lecce?

While the past of Terra di Otranto is certainly interesting, there’s much more in store for you here in this part of Puglia, so if you’re looking for an interesting place to spend some time during your vacation, you’re certain to want to add this region to your itinerary. Some of the things that you could do here include:

Visit Torre dell’Orso beach (and any of the area’s beaches)

The many stunning beaches on offer is just one of the things that makes this part of Italy such an excellent holiday destination. The Province of Lecce has a few of its own, with one of the most notable being Torre dell’Orso beach. It’s not just popular for being the best in the region, but it’s actually considered to be one of the most beautiful in the entirety of the Adriatic Sea. Since it’s also a great spot to relax, you won’t want to miss out on coming here.

Check out the San Cataldo Nature Reserve

With a host of flora and fauna (from Mediterranean plants, to common animals), it’s not hard to see why this reserve is well worth a visit. The San Cataldo Nature Reserve is almost 70 acres of protected land, so when stopping by you can rest assured that you’ll be able to relax in the beauty of nature.

Spend a few hours in Salandra square

Nardò is a beautiful old town and within this location is Salandra Square; an area that is home to stunning architecture, breathtaking churches, and much more. While wandering around the town, you could easily make a quick stop for a drink or snack at one of the many traditional cafés. The square is just phenomenal at night, as the whole are is lit up – and we’re sure that you’ll want to see this for yourself.
