Why Visit Polignano a Mare?
If you’re looking forward to visiting Puglia in 2021, we’re certain that you’ve already got a few plans on what to do during your time here. Even so, there are still many things to see and do in the region that you would love, but probably haven’t heard about.
One example of this could be Polignano a Mare – a town that should be on anyone’s list of places in Puglia to check out. While most know it for it’s absolutely breathtaking beach (and rightfully so), there’s so much to love about this area that you simply can’t miss out on the opportunity to see it in person if you get the chance.
An overview of Polignano a Mare
Located just 30 minutes away from the city of Bari, which is one of the main transport hubs of the region, the stunning little coastal town is easily accessible for most people visiting – which only makes it a better choice for those who are looking to have the perfect holiday.
The biggest draw to this area is Cala Porto (also known as Lama Monachile), one of Puglia’s most picturesque locations. This area is absolutely gorgeous and one of the few things that brings wider tourist attention to Puglia (not too long ago, most non-Italians were completely oblivious of it). The limestone cliffs, beautiful water and the sight of the area overall is just incredible and something you’ll certainly want to experience while visiting. Of course, there is much more to this location than the beach – but if you’re in the area you just can’t overlook it.
Overall, the beauty lies in iconic sights like that of Lama Monachile, as well as the charming white-washed streets that Puglia is so well known for, amazing sites like Chiesa Matrice and so much more.
Things to see and do in Polignano a Mare
With years in the touring business, our team here at Travel Puglia know almost everything there is to know about this beautiful region – and to help you out, we thought we’d make a little list of some of the many things you could do in this town in particular:
Visit Grotta Palazzese
This region has a broad range of things that could offer you a unique and wonderful experience, but one restaurant that takes it to another level is Grotta Palazzese. This establishment is simply fantastic, thanks to the fact that it’s hidden within an ancient cave. From the delicious foods on the menu, to the sights outside of the sea (as well as the atmosphere of the restaurant itself), it’s one of the town’s finest eateries.
Spend a day (or even a few hours) at Cala Porto
While this is something that a lot of people will want to do when visiting this part of Puglia, it’s worth noting that despite the crowds, it’s still an area that’s well worth a visit. The iconic view from the town alone is something you’ll want to see (and take pictures of, of course), so even an hour or two will be enough if you don’t fancy sitting down and staying for too long. Alternatively, you could easily spend a day relaxing here – it’s up to you!
Explore Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II
If you’re hoping to have an insight on the culture and more historic beauty of this area and immerse yourself in the Puglian lifestyle, it might be worthwhile to pay a visit to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the main square of the town. You could grab a quick snack or coffee at a cafe while you’re here and just watch as the world goes by around you, or wander through the streets and feel the ancient atmosphere of this area for yourself.
See the sights from Balconata sul Mare
There are some truly incredible photos of Cala Porto, but some of the best ones are taken from Balconata sul Mare. If you visit the old town (which you should definitely consider doing), make a point of checking out this outstanding vantage point before you leave – especially if you’re hoping to take some great pictures to show off to your friends and family back home!
All this and so much more
These are only 4 things that you should look into ready for your trip to Polignano a Mare – although there’s much more to love about this town that you might not want to overlook either. Whether you’re interesting in hiking and cliff diving, trying some of the absolutely delicious ice cream (some would consider it the best in the area), or just sight-seeing, this could be the perfect place for you to come during your holiday.
