Tips for those Going On a Driving Tour of Puglia

If you’re looking for a great location to visit for an Italian road trip, chances are you’ll find Puglia to be the best choice. There’s so much to love about this destination, but one of the key points to keep in mind is that countless people consider these types of trips the best vacations in Puglia overall.

Before you decide to go on your own tours of Puglia, be sure to take a look at a couple of tips from a professional tour company – it could help you to plan out your stay ahead of time and save you some hassle later on.

  1. If you’re renting a car, you can do so right by the airport

If you want to take a tour on the road, you’re probably going to need a vehicle to get around in. Vespas are a popular choice, but if you’d prefer to take a proper road trip, it might be worth renting a car. If this sounds good to you, you’ll be glad to hear that you can do so right by the airport!

There are two airports here (in Bari and Brindisi), and both of them have rental car options, so you can rest assured that you can get a ride right from the beginning of your trip (note: it’s often best to book in advance if you want to save time, money, and stress on your vacation).

  1. Be warned: country roads are often narrow

A lot of the time, taking the highway can be far more convenient and generally save you time and money on your journey. While there are some stunning views along the countryside roads, they tend to be incredibly narrow and you may even find that there’s barely enough room for two cars. They can be beautiful, but if you don’t want to get lost or deal with narrow lanes, it might be best to stick with the main roads on your travels (particularly if you find yourself in a rush).

  1. Try to avoid spending too much time driving through the main cities

While the cities of Puglia may be wonderful (and well worth exploring), it may be good to remember that getting around in these areas isn’t always as easy as you may think. A lot of the older accessways will resemble roads from villages and won’t always be properly marked, so if you want to avoid getting lost down a difficult side street, it’s best to find a parking spot as soon as possible and take some time to explore on foot. It’s even more bewildering at night, so try to make sure you know the path or leave while the sun is still up.

  1. Don’t go into the ZTL driving zones

Another reason why it might be worth staying clear of major cities on your route is because of the ZTL driving zones (Zona Traffico Limitatio, or Limited Traffic Zones, in English). These are found in most of the major cities, and while they do make it more pleasant for visitors and residents walking around, you could end up with a fine if you’re caught on one of the cameras that check for breaches.

If you’re planning on visiting Puglia next year, it might be worth taking a look at some of the regulations for the destination you have in mind to avoid any issues.
