Must Visit Historic Towns and Cities in Puglia

There are so many incredible towns and cities located in the Italian region of Puglia, and with most of them having an interesting historical and cultural aura, you’re sure to want to pay a few of these a visit during your vacation here. With each area having something special that makes it so unique and iconic, you’re likely to find that no two towns are alike. If you’re interested in exploring some of these beautiful locations, be sure to take a closer look at:

Ostuni

One of the region’s most iconic towns is Ostuni – and this is thanks to the many white-washed homes that are located here.

While you could easily spend hours just wandering through the streets, there are a number of great landmarks to explore, too. A few examples of sites that you may want to check out are the Civiltà preclassiche della Murgia Meridionale (Museum of Pre-classical Civilisations of Southern Murgia) and the Church of San Vito Matire.

Bari

If you enter the city of Bari via airport or even train, you’re likely to see an ordinary urban European city. However if you travel a little further out, away from the industrial zones, you’ll come across a promontory – and this is where Bari was first founded.

Inhabited more than 4,000 years ago during the Bronze Age, this area certainly has plenty of historic beauty and an impressive atmosphere. It has been used for a number of purposes over the years – with the most recent being a medieval monastery, which lasted up until the 19th century. Today, it’s an archeological excavation site that is open to the public – and with a number of walkways showing off the excavations that have been found, you’re sure to be left in awe after a visit.

This isn’t all that there is to love about Bari though, so if you find yourself in the area, be sure to look past the city and find the ancient beauty that this location holds.

Ginosa

If you’re looking for a town that not only has an ancient feel, but also the beauty of nature; Ginosa is a must-visit. This town is recognisable by the fact that it’s located within a ravine, but there are plenty of other amazing things about Ginosa – like the beautiful rock-cut homes and impressive Norman castle.

Alberbello

Trulli huts are an iconic part of Puglia – and since Alberobello is home to so many of these ancient dwellings, most will find that this town is well worth a visit.

While some may find that Alberobello is popular among tourists, they don’t detract from the town’s beauty at all. There are plenty of amazing trulli huts here, but that’s not all – just take landmarks like the Church of Saint Anthony as an example.
